It’s tricky stuff the first time people meet you as an author! I mean how do you lead off without coming across as A) Needy B) Egotistical C) a Prat?
Do you go for the flattery approach? “You look so fabulous tonight…is that silk?...I’m a lucky man…” leaving you looking like a sleazeball from a 1970’s nightclub!
Or do you go the honesty route…”Nice to meet you…God I’m nervous. Are you nervous? Let’s get a drink …”
Nothing else for it…I think I’ll go the honesty route.
Hello. I am a fledgling author. One who is hoping that through my blogging, tweeting and general media tarting of myself and my words, you will be inspired to read a copy of my new book. More than that actually. I want you to buy the book, enjoy it, recommend it to your friends, become a mini champion and basically beat your drum on my behalf!
Too honest? Well maybe, but in return I’ll make you a promise. I promise to deliver insightful, entertaining and funny blogs. Moreover, I will talk about my debut novel which I think delivers a page turner, a crime fiction experience full of action, character and the odd dark moment. It will hopefully leave you wanting more.
Growing up, I used to sneak copies of the pulpy paperbacks my Dad was reading. I knew they weren’t meant for a kid like me, but that made them even more delicious.
The fast moving, action driven stories of the likes of Alistair MacLean and Jack Higgins. The whipsmart dialogue of Elmore Leonard and the hard boiled plots of Richard Stark…they held me enraptured and made me want to write exciting fiction that drove you forward, desperate to know how it all ended for heroes and villains alike.
So that is the kind of storytelling I aspire to. And if you come on the journey with me, I promise to try reach some of those heights and together we can have some fun…
Oh… and I will buy you that drink too…
PS…the book is called Standstill…and its out in September. Don’t worry I’ll keep you posted!
